Low voter turnout marks Ctg-8 by-polls
The by-elections in Chattogram-8 constituencies (Chandgaon, Boalkhali) were held today amid very low voter turnout.
Only 117 votes (3.21%) were cast till 2pm at Shamser Para Haji Chan Mia Primary School centre. The number of total voters in this centre is 3,642.
Same scenario was observed in Chandgaon CDA Public School, Mohammadia Government Primary School and nearby centres. During a visit to the polling centres, this reporter found that not all candidates had agents present in some centres.
Presiding officers said 90 votes (5%) were cast at 10 booths of CDA Public School centre till 1:30pm. The number of total voters in this centre is 2,023.
Md Arifuzzaman, presiding officer of CDA Public School centre, stated that the turnout is low due to many individuals being on Eid vacation and traveling home.
The voting began at 8am with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and continued till 4pm in 1,414 polling booths in 190 centres on Thursday.
District Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk said magistrates along with police, RAB, and Ansar forces have been deployed to ensure fair polling.
