For the first time in Bangladesh, Chattogram's private Inland Container Depot (ICD), Eastern Logistics Limited, has introduced two 'Double Stacking Empty Container Handlers'.
These advanced machines, supplied by the Finland-based company Konecranes, were officially handed over to depot authorities today (4 February) at the Katgarh area of the city.
Konecranes highlighted that container handling in Bangladesh was previously limited to single-stacking handlers. The introduction of double-stacking technology at Eastern Logistics marks a significant milestone for container handling operations in the country.
Ratan Biswas, country manager of Konecranes and Demag (Bangladesh) Ltd, said that the double stacker container handlers, manufactured in Sweden, were supplied at a cost of approximately Tk7 crore.
"These handlers allow for double the container capacity with a single operator and the same fuel consumption, effectively cutting handling time and costs in half," he said.
Biswas also emphasised the safety and efficiency of the new equipment. "The operator's cabin, which has won the World's Best Award, ensures 100% safety. Operators have undergone one-and-a-half months of specialised training in China to efficiently manage the stackers. Additionally, we have implemented measures to ensure round-the-clock operations," he added.
At the handover ceremony, Eastern Logistics Chairman Shah Alam expressed optimism about the impact of the new equipment.
"Konecranes has been our equipment partner for the last 15 years, handling the largest volume of empty containers among ICDs. This new container handler will double productivity at the same operational cost, making overall port operations more dynamic. I encourage other depot owners to adopt such advanced equipment," he said.
According to the Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (Bicda), over 6 lakh TEUs of empty containers are handled annually by 20 ICDs. In 2024, a total of 6,24,302 TEUs of empty containers were handled, compared to 5,82,605 TEUs in 2023.
Bicda Secretary General Ruhul Amin Shikder said, "Single stacking handlers are currently used for empty container handling at Chattogram Port and ICDs. The addition of double stacking handlers will significantly reduce time and costs, boosting revenue for ICDs."
Konecranes emphasised the state-of-the-art features of the Double Empty Container Handlers, which can handle two empty containers simultaneously without increasing fuel consumption. The equipment is expected to play a critical role in alleviating container congestion at Chattogram Port.
Shreekanta Dhar, Manager (Accounts and HR) of Konecranes and Demag (Bangladesh) Ltd said, "Konecranes supplies various equipment to Chattogram, Mongla, and Payra ports, as well as other depots across the country."
The new stackers come with advanced monitoring capabilities, allowing real-time tracking via mobile devices. The operator's seat is air-conditioned and offers a 360-degree view. Additionally, sensors installed around the cameras ensure safety by detecting and stopping the machine if any person unexpectedly approaches.
