Poorly qualified graduates are a burden: UGC chief
He pointed fingers at the learning and teaching processes at universities
The country's public and private sector employers are facing severe problems with the burden of poorly qualified and unskilled graduates, said the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah.
"Their abilities and skill are not satisfactory because of a lack of knowledge," said the UGC chief. He also pointed fingers at the learning and teaching processes at universities.
The professor made the observations while addressing a workshop titled 'Present Situation of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell and Future Plan' at the UGC office in Dhaka on Monday.

Dr Shahidullah said: "Quality education actually depends on teachers. That is why they should focus on knowledge accumulation through continuous study and research."
"Teaching is a profession of pride and respect. They (teachers) should not treat it as just another job," said Shahidullah. He called upon teachers to concentrate on research to retrieve their reputation.
"The UGC will allocate a budget to public universities based on their annual performance. A university must undertake a satisfactory number of research projects annually if it wants to increase budgetary allocation. We will evaluate everything," he added.
UGC Member Professor Dr Alamgir Hossain gave the welcome speech while UGC Members Professor Dr Akhter Hossain and Professor Dr Sazzad Hossain, UGC Secretary Dr Mohammad Khaled and other senior teachers of different universities were also present at the workshop.
