On 18 September, Md Mamun, 30, was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Khagrachhari Sadar. In response, on 19 September, students organised a protest rally where provocative speeches were made, igniting arguments between the Bangalis and people of the ethnic community.
Clashes ensued and at one point, arsonists set fire to about 50 shops at Larma Square in Dighinala upazila. Five people were injured in the incident.
Later at night, there were shootings in the Narankhaiya area of Khagrachari Sadar where three people were killed and nine people were injured.
Tensions escalated in neighbouring district Rangamati as violent clashes and counter-clashes left one person dead and over fifty injured on 20 September.
The incidents led to heightened tensions and heavy law enforcement deployment in both regions. Amid deteriorating situation, local administrations imposed Section 144 in the two districts.
