Jute mill workers get wage commission slip
According to the new wage scale, the jute mill workers’ wages would increase 80-85%
Jute mill workers at nine state-owned mills in Khulna finally received wage slips on Thursday (January 16th) after holding protests for a long time.
Boniz Uddin Miah, liaison officer of the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) in Khulna confirmed this.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation, the wage commission was announced in 2015 along with the pay-commission. However, with no implementation in sight till now, jute mill workers were left with little choice but to protest.

Jute mill workers have expressed happiness over receiving the wage slips, and now wait to get their wage commission money.
Abdus Salam Miah, a jute mill worker, said that receiving a wage slip had brought a smile to his face. He added, "I can now send my children to school."
Mohammed Golam Rabbani, the general manager of Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills, said, "Officials at the mill distributed wage commission slips to the workers in the presence of the workers' leaders."
Sahana Sarmin, president of Platinum workers union, thanked the government, and added that it should take further steps to make the jute mills profitable as well.
According to the new wage scale, workers' wages would increase 80-85%, almost doubling.
Earlier, the workers had undertaken a "fast-unto-death", to pressure the government into accepting their 11 demands, all of which were later accepted.
