Khulna club takeover: Gono Odhikar Parishad dismisses local leader
SK Rashed has been dismissed due to involvement in activities against the party's constitution, says a statement
Gono Odhikar Parishad has dismissed its Khulna metropolitan unit General Secretary SK Rashed for his involvement in occupying the office building of a local sports club called Panchabithi Krira Chakra in the city's Shantidham Mor area.
The organisation's Central Office Secretary Shakil Uzzaman announced the dismissal in a statement last night (27 January).
It said Rashed was dismissed "due to involvement in activities against the party's constitution."
At around 2:30pm yesterday, Gono Odhikar members led by Rashed reportedly broke the club's lock and went in. They later removed the club's signboard and put up a banner that reads "Gono Odhikar Parishad, Khulna Metropolitan and District Office".
"We received various complaints about gambling and immoral activities taking place at the club. We repeatedly warned them, but no action was taken. Therefore, with the support of locals, we have taken control of the club. From now on, no unethical activities will be allowed here," Rashed told the media yesterday.
Meanwhile, no Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders were seen present at the location at around 10am this morning (28 January).
Debu, a tea stall owner next to the club, said, "No one has opened the club's doors since morning. I haven't seen anyone coming here either."
The Panchabithi Krira Chakra office, housed on the second floor of a government-owned building allotted by the Public Works Department in 2010, has been operating from that location for the past 14 years.
