The incident occurred around 2am when the vessel named “MV Seven Circle-23” hit the bridge's pillar
A lighter vessel, carrying 1,175 tonnes of raw materials for cement production, submerged in the Rupsha River after hitting a pillar of the railway bridge on the river in Khulna today (31 January).
The incident occurred around 2am when the vessel named "MV Seven Circle-23" hit the bridge's pillar, Lieutenant Commander Md Siam-ul-Haq, media officer at the Coast Guard Headquarters, told The Business Standard.
He said the vessel suffered damage approximately two feet below the waterline due to the collision, causing water to ingress.
"Subsequently, the Coast Guard was alerted, and a rescue team was dispatched from the BCG Ruphsa station to the scene. Upon inspection, a significant portion of the anchored lighter vessel was found submerged," he added.
He further said all 13 crew members aboard were safe and had not suffered any harm. "The Coast Guard has already contacted the vessel's owners and is providing assistance in the rescue operation."
