Mostafa Amin, who gathered people at Shahbagh under guise of offering loans, detained
However, Amin has been admitted to a hospital due to illness
Pollice have detained ABM Mostafa Amin, whose organisation Ahingsa Ganaavyuthan Bangladesh tried to gather a massive crowd in Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan and Shahbagh areas today (25 November) by luring hundreds of people from different districts with the false promise of big interest-free loans from the government.
Sohel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Ramna division, confirmed The Business Standard this evening about Amin being taken into custody.
However, Amin has been admitted to a hospital due to illness, said the official.
Sohel added that a case is being filed against Amin, who is the convener of little-known organisation "Ahingsa Ganaavyuthan Bangladesh", or Nonviolent People's Upheaval Bangladesh (NPUB) -- which on 22 November announced the rally but never got permission to hold it.
Amin is also the convener of Forward Party.
Under the banner of NPUB, a large crowd of hundreds of people, arriving in numerous buses, microbuses, and pickups, had started gathering at Suhrawardy Udyan on the Dhaka University (DU) campus and Shahbagh late last night (24 November) for the rally called today.
The people, who came from rural areas of different districts, were told they would get interest-free loans between Tk1 lakh and Tk1 crore from the government after attending the rally.
DU students and police later managed to convince the people to leave the Udyan and Shahbagh areas after informing them that there was no rally scheduled today and there was no programme scheduled to distribute loans either.
