One arrested over escape of 2 convicts from police custody
Police filed a case accusing 20 people in the snatching incident
The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Police has arrested one of the accused in the escape of two convicted death row militants from the premises of a Dhaka court.
The arrested – Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi – is an accused in the case filed over the incident, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Faruq Hossain.
"CTTC Additional Commissioner of Police, Md Asaduzzaman, will give details about the arrest of Mehdi Hasan Omi at a press conference on Thursday," he added.
According to police, two Ansar Al Islam men, who were among eight sentenced to death for killing Jagriti Publications publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan in 2015, fled from the premises of a Dhaka court on 20 November.
The DMP's Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harun or Rashid said at least 18 people were involved in the escape of the two condemned militants – Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Imran, and Abu Siddiq Sohel.
The escape incident took place when 12 accused were being taken to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dhaka. The 10 other accused have been remanded for 10 days.
Four people on two motorbikes came in and blinded the cops, spraying their faces when the officers were taking the convicts to court to be produced before the Anti-Terrorism Tribunal, according to witnesses.
Police have filed a case with Kotwali police station, accusing 20 people in connection with the snatching incident.
