The government has decided to withdraw over 16,000 "ghost cases" filed during the Awami League regime, Law Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said today (11 February).
A total of 1,214 such cases will be withdrawn within the next week, he said at a press briefing at the Secretariat this afternoon.
The adviser said 16,429 "ghost cases" have been listed and the home ministry and the law ministry are working together to check the records of these cases to see if any of these are actually political harassment cases.
"If a murder case was lodged against an individual by another person, we cannot withdraw it. We are thoroughly verifying each case record before proceeding," he said.
"A gazette regarding the withdrawal of 53 cases will be published within two days. The government considers these cases to be cases of political harassment," he added.
The adviser also said all cases related to the Cyber Security Act will be withdrawn by February.
"A total of 396 cases were filed during the previous government over speech offenses. The Ministry of Law has already withdrawn 332 cases through public prosecutors. The decision to withdraw 61 more cases has been finalised."
He said, however, three such cases cannot be withdrawn as these are pending at the High Court.
