Protests against rapes continue in Dhaka

Supporters of Save Our Women - Bangladesh, a non-profit organisation today formed a human chain to protest against rapes in Bangladesh.

They took to the streets of Shahbagh to demand amendment to the law regarding rape and speedy trials of rapists.

The organisation also demanded dedicated court for rape trials and death penalty for rapists.

"No rapist should be above the law. They should be hanged and the verdict should be given within a month," said Organising Secretary of the organisation Simanto Sarker.

"Key points of the city should be put under CCTV surveillance with enough light facilities," he further added.

President of Save Our Women Sanjida Khan said, "We took to the street because we want our safety in home, outside and when we go out on the road."

"So many rape incidents have been occurring in the country and many remain unreported, so we want to raise awareness in society and for families who conceal rape incidents," she added.

She urged families and societies to ensure moral lessons to educate their male children.

Besides, hundreds of protesters are chanting slogans on the road in front of the National Museum.

Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad also formed a human chain holding black flags to protest the government's lax steps regarding rape.

While delivering a speech at the program, Dhaka University Central Students' Union Vice-President Nurul Haque Nur, said: "People are being deprived of justice as culture of factionalism is trending in the justice system."

"We, the protestants are even getting continuously threatened over this issue," added VP Nur.

Protests erupted in the capital and across the country after the incident of brutal assault on a woman in Noakhali's Begumganj came to the light following release of the video on social media by the culprits.
