In an anti-drug operation, RAB-15 officials seized 40kg of marijuana and detained an alleged drug trafficker in Cox's Bazar's Chakaria upazila last night (13 November).
Senior Assistant Director (Legal and Media) and Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police, Debojit Pal, from RAB-15 Cox's Bazar Battalion, said the operation was conducted on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway near the Medhakacchapia National Park Office in Khutakhali union.
The arrested suspect, identified as Md Mahafuzur Rahman, 26, is the son of Golam Mohammad from Purba Padua, Lohagara upazila in Chattogram district.
"Acting on information about a large drug shipment being transported from Chakaria, a RAB team set up a temporary checkpoint near Medhakacchapia National Park on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway," said Debojit Pal.
"When a passenger bus, named 'Chakaria Service Limited', approached from Chakaria, the RAB team stopped the vehicle for inspection. One passenger's behavior seemed suspicious, leading to his detention and further questioning."
"Subsequent searches of his belongings revealed two sacks, each containing 20kg of marijuana, totaling 40kg," he added.
According to Debojit Pal, the suspect confessed to purchasing drug consignments from various border areas, bringing them to Cox's Bazar in disguise as a passenger, and selling them wholesale to local buyers.
"He admitted to long-term involvement in drug trafficking, collecting shipments from border areas, and transporting them to Cox's Bazar for distribution," said the RAB official.
A case has been filed against the suspect under relevant narcotics laws at Chakaria Police Station, he confirmed.
