Two motorcyclists killed in road accident in Chattogram’s Sitakunda
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Yunus, 18, son of Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shah Jalal, 18, son of Mohammad Belal
Two motorcyclists lost their lives in a devastating road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway near Kumira in Chattogram's Sitakunda this (5 December) evening.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Yunus, 18, son of Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shah Jalal, 18, son of Mohammad Belal, according to police.
Both the victims hailed from the Chhagalnaiya area of Feni district, said Abdul Momin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bara Aulia Highway Police Station.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred around 6pm when a motorcycle on the Dhaka-bound lane slowed down while attempting to cross a sand pile that had been left on the side of the highway.
At that moment, a speeding covered van coming from behind collided with the motorcycle. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle was crushed, and the victims were thrown 30-40 feet from the crash site. Both riders died instantly.
OC Monin said the two victims had travelled from Feni to Chattogram earlier in the day with a group of friends for leisure. "The accident took place when they were returning home in the evening."
He said, "The culprit vehicle could not be identified. The families are not interested in filing a case. So, the bodies will be handed over without autopsy."
The Kumira Fire Service recovered the bodies from the site, and the highway police confirmed that they were conducting the necessary legal procedures. The bodies will be handed over to the victims' families once formalities are completed.
