Dhaka North plans to turn Mohakhali DNCC Market into a hospital
The six-storey market is now being used as a Covid-19 isolation centre
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) plans to turn the DNCC market in Dhaka's Mohakhali area into a 500-bed urban hospital.
Mayor Atiqul Islam said this on Sunday while inspecting the six-storey market which is now being used as a Covid-19 isolation centre. Atiqul told the press: "This market was set up as a wholesale kitchen market, but the plan could not be implemented for various reasons."
"Last year we formulated the budget of the city corporation with a plan to sell 700 shops. But then came Covid-19."

"DNCC does not have an urban hospital of its own. So we are planning to convert the market into a hospital. And we also plan to turn Mirpur's Paris market into a hospital, too."
"We will submit a proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to turn both markets into hospitals as soon as possible. The councillors have also agreed with the plan."
"We want to give city residents a modern hospital," Atiqul said.
The mayor added that there are all types of equipment including 25 intensive care unit (ICU) beds at the Mohakhali DNCC Market's isolation centre.
"Now 2,000 to 3,000 people can have the Covid-19 test done at the centre. Doctors, nurses, and officers from the health ministry are working here," Atiqul said.
