Laboratory launched to boost fish production in Khulna
The laboratory is funded by the "Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity," of USAID
World Fish Bangladesh, a research organisation, and Fishtech BD Ltd have jointly set up an aquatic animal health laboratory in Khulna to provide consultancy services and carry out research on fish and shrimp diagnostics at the private level.
It was inaugurated on Thursday.
The "Fishtech Laboratory" is funded by the "Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture and Nutrition Activity," of USAID, according to WorldFish Bangladesh.
It will provide various services at a fixed cost to fishery farmers, including diagnosis of various diseases of fish and shrimp and soil-water testing of farms.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Khandaker Farhad Hossain, chairman of Fishtech, said, "The laboratory will play a very important role for fish farmers in the south. Because it will be possible to take quick action by testing various diseases of fish."
In 2017-18 production year, Khulna produced 681,274 tonnes of fish. Farmers are suffering huge losses and losing interest in fish farming due to the severe outbreak of various diseases among fishes and shrimps.
