“He was detained based on requisition of a complaint. Accordingly, he will be handed over to the designated police station,” said DB Additional Commissioner Police Rezaul Karim Mallik
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, has been detained by members of the Detective Branch of the police from the Dhaka airport today (25 November).
DB Additional Commissioner Police Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed the matter, saying, "Chinmoy has been taken into custody."
He said, "He has been detained based on requisition of a complaint. Accordingly, he will be handed over to the designated police station."
Rezaul, however, did not provide details about the charges for which Chinmoy has been detained.
Meanwhile, citing Sanatani Jagran Jote's key organiser Gaurang Das Brahmachari, a bdnews24 report said, "Chinmoy was supposed to go to Chattogram by air from Dhaka. I heard that he has been picked up by the police from Dhaka airport."
As reports of Chinmoy's detention spread, the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagran Manch brought out a procession demanding his immediate release in Barishal.
Speaking at the protest event at Sadar Road in the city, one of the protesters said, "Chinmoy Krishna Das is working to keep the Sanatani people together. He is our leader. By arresting him, a message is being sent to the Hindus that there is no safety for us anywhere. We want to make it clear that Chinmoy Krishna Das must be released immediately. Otherwise more stringent programs will be announced."
Later, in the evening, another group of people attempted to gather at the Shahabagh intersection in protest of the arrest of Chinmoy.
"However, the public dispersed them within 10 minutes," said Khalid Mansur, officer in Charge of Shahabagh police station.
He added that the police didn't force the protesters to leave the area.
Earlier on the day, a Facebook page associated with Pundarik Dham, where Chinmoy is the principal, posted one of his photos and wrote that he was "picked up by individuals identifying as DB police from Dhaka airport."
On 30 October, a case was filed against 19 people, including Chinmoy Krishna Das, with Chattogram's Kotwali Police Station, accusing them of desecrating the national flag during a rally at Lal Dighi ground on 25 October.
Firoz Khan, general secretary of city's Mohra Ward BNP, filed the case.
The Bangladesh Sanatan Jagran Jote, a platform advocating for the rights of Hindus, held a massive rally in Chattogram earlier this month, demanding the withdrawal of the "false" case.
