Locals marry off 8 young men and women after ‘raiding’ Sylhet resort
Local residents of South Surma upazila in Sylhet today (19 January) held 12 young men and women from a resort and married off eight of them.
The incident took place at Regent Park and Resort in the Silam area of South Surma this afternoon, according to police.
The remaining four youths were released to their guardians as they were not of marriageable age.
Moglabazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Khandaker Mostafizur Rahman said, "We went to the spot after receiving news of some young men and women being held. Later, the elders of the area informed their guardians. I have heard that some were married off with the consent of their guardians."
According to locals, more than a hundred people from the Silam area raided the resort in the afternoon, alleging that "anti-social activities" were going on. They held six couples from six rooms of the resort. The age of the youths is between 16 and 22 years.
Responding to a question, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Saiful Islam said, "If someone has committed a crime, the police will catch them. The court will try him. But there is no law to force marriage after detention."
He further said, "I heard that eight of them were married off. We are investigating the matter."
The Business Standard could not get a statement from anyone at Regent Park and Resort on this matter. However, a post on the resort's Facebook page in the evening reads, "Due to unavoidable circumstances, all activities at our resort will be closed indefinitely."
