A group of 30/40 people vandalised the Habib Group office in Chattogram causing damage worth Tk40 lakh on Saturday.
Police suspect that the vandals may have done this over arrears dues of salaries and for layoffs, even though Habib group said they do not know why.
The incident took place in the Love Lane area of the port city around 1pm.
Habib Group official Suranjit Pal said he was not sure what caused the attack, adding that the group of men carried out the surprise attack in just 10 minutes and left.
"The attackers vandalised the entire four-storey building, including a private car used by Habib Group director Md Elias, their disinfectant tunnels, building glass, security rooms, front desks and furniture in front of the building," said Suranjit.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin told The Business Standard that police had visited the spot and collected CCTV footage.
"We have already started the investigation. Habib Group has not yet lodged any complaint in this regard. If they do, we will take action accordingly," said OC Mohammad Mohsin.
Habib Group, a leading industrial group in Chattogram, has over a dozen industrial establishments. Among them Regent Airways, Regent Textiles, Regent Power, Habib Steel, Anowara Paper Mills, Diamond Cement are notable.
