Two people went missing and four people were burnt in an explosion in a trawler carrying fuel oil drums in the Kirtankhola River in Barishal today (12 February).
The incident took place in the area adjacent to the city's Trish Godown this evening, said Helal Uddin Khan, assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Of the four injured, two have been identified as Rubel and Mannan. The identities of the two missing are not known yet.
"We believe the explosion occurred in the engine room of the trawler. Then the fuel oil kept in the engine room caught fire," Helal said.
"Three of the injured have suffered severe burns. They have been admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital."
An operation is underway to rescue the missing, he added.
Tea shop owner Kalu, an eyewitness, said he saw one person jump into the river after being burnt. "A number of people were rescued after they jumped into the river. We have sent three people to the hospital," he said.
