GAIN launches project to ensure safe and nutritious foods for people amid Covid-19 crisis

A project named 'EatSafe: Evidence and Action towards Safe, Nutritious Food: Covid-19 Response' has been launched in collaboration with USAID, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Unnayan Shangha to help ensure nutritious food supply for people of the country during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
The launching ceremony of the project was held at a seminar room of the Science Bhaban at Government Teacher's training college (TTC) in Dhaka on Monday said a press release issued by GAIN.
ASM Ferdous, councillor of no 18 ward of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), inaugurated the project as the chief guest.
President of Banalata Market Business Association in New Market Md Moklesur Rahman, GAIN's Country Director Dr Rudaba Khandker, General Secretary of the association Dr Samrat Naser Khaleque, Acting Vice Principal of TTC Momtaj Shahanara, Project Director of Unnayan Sangha Shakhawat Hossain as well as other important personnel form the respective organisations also attended the ceremony.
With the financial support of USAID, a non-government organisation (NGO) named Unnayan Sangha will implement the year-long project in association with Switzerland-based NGO GAIN, the release added.
The project's tenure may be extended depending on the prevailing situation and demand.
The speakers in the program said that ensuring nutritious and safe foods among people has become a challenging due to the coronavirus crisis in the country.
With this in mind, they called upon private entrepreneurs to come forward for diversification of foods and ensuring nutritious and safe foods for the people along with smooth market management.
Initially, to be headed by leaders of New Market and Islampur vegetable market committees, the project will be implemented with the involvement of food commodity suppliers, sellers, buyers and local eminent persons.
