S Alam Group to import 20,000 tonnes onions from Holland
The imported onions will be handed over to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh
S Alam Group, a large trading company of the country, will import 20,000 metric tonnes of onions from Holland to tackle the ongoing crisis in the country's onion market.
In this regard, the company opened an LC with Rupali Bank on Sunday.
Md Akij Uddin, private secretary of S Alam Group Chairman Saiful Alam Masud, told The Business Standard that the group will import the onions from Holland in bulk carriers (open cargo ships).
"All efforts are underway to bring the onion consignment within the shortest possible time. We hope these onions will reach the Chittagong port within the next one month," he said.
The onions will be handed over to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), he added.
"S Alam Group is importing onions as part of its social responsibility to address the ongoing onion crisis in the country, not for any commercial purposes. Earlier, we imported onions in 2016 and 2019 in such situations," said Akij Uddin.
If the onion market is not stable even after importing 20,000 metric tonnes of onions, we have plans to import another 30,000 metric tonnes of the cooking staple later, he added.
