Now Zion confesses involvement in Abrar murder
Abrar was bludgeoned to death allegedly by Chhatra League leaders and activists
Meftahul Islam Zion on Friday confessed to his involvement in Abrar murder.
Zion was the deputy sports secretary of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) chapter of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch Inspector Wahiduzzaman said Zion was sent to the court after the end of a five-day remand to record his confession.
Court sources quoted Zion as saying he was not directly involved in the murder.
Zion said he was aware of the fact that Abrar was going to be assaulted and that he also had information about Abrar being called and transferred from one room to another, they said.
Zion also claimed that Anik Sarker and Ifti Mosharraf Sakal was directly involved in the killing of Abrar, the sources said.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifuzzaman Ansari recorded Zion's confessional statement and sent him to jail.
Previously on Thursday, another ex-Buet Chhatra League leader Ifti Mosharrf Sakal made the first confessional statement in the murder case.
A Dhaka court on October 8 allowed police a five-day remand to quiz arrested activists of Chhatra League, including Sokal and Zion.
Barkat Ullah, father of the deceased Abrar Fahad, filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station implicating 19 Buet students. The law enforcers have arrested 17 people in connection with the murder of Abrar so far, 13 of whom are accused in the case.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department, was bludgeoned to death by Chhatra League leaders and activists inside his dormitory over a Facebook post protesting against a recent deal between Bangladesh and India.
Police recovered the body with extensive bruises from Buet dormitory in the early hours of October 7.
