Being held against their will, the victims’ experience was no doubt harrowing, but their silence prevents the mysteries behind abductions from being revealed.
One of these victims, former state minister Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj’s nephew Syed Iftekhar Alam Sourav was rescued from Mymemsingh’s Tarakanda upazila on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Abid Hossain later told reporters that the abductors released Sourav near a rice mill in Battola area around 5:30am. He was picked up by a gang of culprits on June 9 in front of Afmi Plaza in Chattogram city. Later, a general diary (GD) was filed with Panchlaish police station.
On July 3 last year, law enforcers rescued columnist and writer Farhad Mazhar from Jashore around 11:30pm while he was travelling on a Dhaka-bound Hanif Paribahan bus from Khulna.
Farhad and his family claimed that he had been kidnapped by several miscreants in the morning of July 3, shortly after he left his Adabar home to buy some medicines. According to police, they are unsure whether Farhad was abducted.
Why and how Farhad Mazhar got into the bus bound for Dhaka remains an unresolved mystery to this day.
On April 18, 2014, police rescued Abu Bakar Siddique, husband of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) chief Syeda Rizwana Hasan, two days after his abduction. He was found inside a CNG-run auto-rickshaw when police stopped the vehicle at a check post on Mirpur Road in Kalabagan around 1:30pm.
Unidentified miscreants abducted him on April 16 in Fatulla area of Narayanganj, while he was travelling to Dhaka from Narayanganj by his car. Siddique is the managing director of Hamid Fashion, a Narayanganj-based garment factory owned by Awami League lawmaker and State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid Bipu.
Former lawmaker and BNP Organising Secretary (Sylhet Division) M Ilias Ali has remained missing along with his driver since April 17, 2012.
Top leader of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) Michael Chakma went missing on April 9 this year while on his way to Dhaka from Narayanganj.
Police are yet to find any clue about the whereabouts of Ilias and Michael.
