Flood isolates Bandarban, Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar road connectivity cut off
No electricity for the past two days in some areas of Bandarban
Continuous rain and landslides have isolated Bandarban as the district has been inundated with most ways of communication disrupted. Meanwhile, the flood waters have cut off the road connectivity between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar.
With the Chandanaish, Satkania portion of Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway underwater, fearing further landslides authorities halted vehicular movement on the highway from Monday (7 August).
In Bandarban, low-lying roads are all underwater, while some internal roads have been blocked due to landslides. Houses on the bank of river Sangu have already been submerged as the water level kept rising.
In some areas, there has been no electricity for the past two days. In such a dire situation, many residents of the district town and upazila have left their homes and taken shelter in hotels and educational institutions.
"It has been raining continuously since Sunday [6 August]. At least 600-700 locals have been brought to 55 shelters in Lama by boat. But the water flow in low-lying areas is disrupting the rescue process. Landslides have also occurred at different places on the road from Alikadam to Lama to Chakaria in Cox's Bazar. As a result, the vehicular movement has been stopped in those areas," Lama Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mostafa Javed Kaiser told The Business Standard (TBS) on Monday (7 August) night.
Mobile networks in some areas of Bandarban have been unavailable for the past three days as well. Internet services got disrupted. The district administration, district police and fire service officials could not be reached on mobile phones today (8 August) morning.
TBS Bandarban Correspondent U She Thowai Marma said people in the entire city are marooned.
"There have been landslides in some places. Bandarban's road connectivity with Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Cox's Bazar and Chattogram has been suspended. Besides, there are no vehicles plying on Rowangchhari, Ruma and Thanchi routes. Communication has been suspended due to the possibility of landslides due to heavy rains," he added.
"It didn't rain much on Monday night," he said. Heavy rains began again on Tuesday morning.
