Govt appoints administrator for Chattogram chamber
The government has appointed Muhammad Anowar Pasha, additional divisional commissioner (general) of Chattogram, as the administrator for the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Ministry of Commerce issued a notification in this regard on Monday (9 September). He was appointed following Section 17 of the Trade Organizations Ordinance-2022.
The administrator has been asked to hold a fair and neutral election within 120 days and hand over the charge to the elected committee and apprise the ministry of the matter, according to a press release of the ministry.
After the political shift on 5 August, changes are happening across all institutions. On 3 September, Chattogram Chamber President Omar Hajjaj, senior vice-president, vice-president, and 21 directors resigned in the face of criticism.
A 24-member council headed by Omar Hajjaj, son of former Chattogram MP MA Latif, was elected on 6 August 2023.
For the previous decade, the organisation was led by businessman and FBCCI president Mahbubul Alam, backed by MA Latif. After winning the election on 30 March 2013, he served as president for five terms for 10 years.
Some businessmen were upset because the Chattogram chamber had not held elections for a long time. After the fall of the Awami League government, those businessmen demanded the dissolution of the current committee and new elections.
In this reality, the ministry appointed an administrator to keep the activities of the chamber running.
