Doctor in Khulna 'beaten to death' by family members of patient
The doctor, identified as Rakibuddin, 60, is the owner of Raisa Clinic in the city’s Gollamari area
Family members of a patient have allegedly beaten a doctor to death in Khulna.
The doctor, identified as Rakibuddin, 60, is the owner of Raisa Clinic in the city's Gollamari area.
He breathed his last around 6:30pm on Tuesday at Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital.
"Seuli Begum, the wife of Abul Ali Sheikh from Khulna's Batiaghata upazila, went through a caesarean section surgery at Dr Rakib's clinic while giving childbirth on Monday," Dr Rakib's younger brother Saiful Islam, a lecturer at Khulna Model School and College said.
However, as her bleeding did not stop after the childbirth, she was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
KMCH authorities later referred her to a hospital in Dhaka. She died on ambulance on her way to Dhaka.
"Around 8pm, the ambulance carrying Seuli's body came back to the clinic. Her relatives started beating up Dr Rakib, accusing that she died due to wrong treatment," Saiful Islam added.
Around 2am, Dr Rakib was first taken to Khulna City Medical College Hospital, and then was admitted to Gazi Medical College Hospital.
Later, he was transferred to Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital on Tuesday morning. He died in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Director of the hospital Dr Bidhan Chandra Goswami said, "Dr Rakib died due to internal bleeding in his brain."
The accused couldn't be reached for quotes.
Aslam Bahar Bulbul, officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Hospital said, "We went to Raisa Clinic after hearing about the death of Dr Rakib. But the certificate provided by Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital says that he died of heart attack."
However, family members of Dr Rakib can still file a case if they want, he added.
