Newcastle and Liverpool share six-goal thriller as Schar snatches late equaliser
The visitors looked poised to leave Tyneside with a vital win, but Schar had other ideas.
Fabian Schar's dramatic 90th-minute equaliser ensured Newcastle held Premier League leaders Liverpool to a 3-3 draw in a pulsating clash at St James' Park on 4 december.
Alexander Isak's clinical finish on 35 minutes gave Newcastle the lead as they sought a first victory over Liverpool since december 2015. The Swiss defender's late heroics denied the visitors all three points after a second half brimming with action.
Curtis Jones, marking his 150th appearance for Liverpool, brought the visitors level five minutes into the second half, only for Anthony Gordon to put Newcastle back in front on 62 minutes following a clever pass from Isak.
Liverpool, however, turned the game around through Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward, assisted twice by Trent Alexander-Arnold, struck twice in the space of 17 minutes, equalising on 68 minutes and then finding the net again on 85 minutes to give Jürgen Klopp's side the lead.
The visitors looked poised to leave Tyneside with a vital win, but Schar had other ideas. With time running out, he steered a tight-angle finish into the net after Bruno Guimaraes' teasing free-kick caused confusion in Liverpool's defence.
Caoimhin Kelleher, deputising in goal for Liverpool, misjudged the trajectory, allowing Schar to capitalise and rescue a point for Eddie Howe's men.
Liverpool maintain their seven-point advantage at the top of the table ahead of their Merseyside derby against Everton on 7 december. Newcastle, sitting mid-table, face Brentford the same afternoon.
