Still no clarity over Shakib Al Hasan's Champions Trophy participation
Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain addressed the issue during a media interaction, describing the situation as “shocking.”
Shakib Al Hasan's involvement in the upcoming Champions Trophy remains uncertain as questions over his bowling action and government clearance cast doubt on his availability.
The star all-rounder, who previously announced plans to retire from international cricket after the tournament, is facing significant hurdles that could jeopardise his participation.
Shakib's troubles began during a stint in county cricket, where concerns were raised about the legality of his bowling action.
Following an assessment in England, he was banned from bowling after failing the test. A subsequent examination in Chennai also did not clear his action, leading to further complications. Recently, Shakib underwent another reassessment in Chennai, but the results are still pending.
Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain addressed the issue during a media interaction, describing the situation as "shocking." He said, "The first test result was unexpected. We're waiting to confirm if he has participated in another test privately. Every minute is crucial now. We hope to have clarity on the matter in a day or two."
The complications extend beyond his bowling action. Shakib's participation also hinges on government approval. While the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is keen to include him in the squad, any decision requires a green light from higher authorities. BCB President Faruque Ahmed recently expressed his commitment to ensuring Shakib's availability, stating, "We'll make another attempt to secure his participation, but this decision isn't solely the board's. Government clearance is essential."
Shakib had announced his retirement from Test cricket in September last year, citing a desire to play one final Test on home soil. However, political developments prevented him from doing so. His intention to retire from all formats after the Champions Trophy added further emotional weight to his availability for this tournament.
The Champions Trophy squad must be finalised by 12 January, leaving little time for resolution. If Shakib clears his latest bowling action test, his chances of inclusion in the squad will significantly improve. However, until the test results are confirmed and government approval is secured, uncertainty looms over the all-rounder's participation.
Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf summed up the situation, stating, "We've asked the board whether Shakib will be available, but we haven't received a definitive response yet. We know he's undergone another test, but we're awaiting the outcome. Hopefully, the next few days will bring clarity."
Shakib's absence from the Champions Trophy would be a significant blow for Bangladesh cricket, given his stature as one of the nation's most iconic players. Fans and the cricketing fraternity now anxiously await updates on whether the veteran all-rounder can overcome these hurdles to feature in what could be his final international outing.
