Ban on gatherings at Ijtema grounds lifted
Ijtema will be held as previously scheduled
The police have lifted the ban on gatherings at Ijtema grounds in Tongi, Gazipur, and surrounding areas.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr Nazmul Karim Khan confirmed the matter this evening (2 January).
However, for security purposes, police will remain deployed as before, he added.
Earlier on 18 December, Dhaka and Gazipur police banned any kind of gathering, procession, demonstration, etc in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10 and the adjacent South and West of the Turag River in the capital.
The move came following clashes the day before between the followers of Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Zubayer Ahmed and supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi of India over occupying the Bishwa Ijtema field in Tongi, Gazipur, which left at least two dead and hundreds injured.
Police also barred the public from entering the Ijtema grounds until further notice.
The Gazipur police commissioner also said from now on, people will be able to carry out their usual activities at the Ijtema grounds.
The Ijtema will be held as previously scheduled, he added.
