Attack on Ghoraghat UNO: 2 put on 7-day remand
A Dinajpur court has granted a seven-day remand for each of the two arrestees accused of attacking Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam and her father.
The accused are Nabirul Islam and Santu Kumar.
Shishir Kumar Basu, judge at Chief Judicial Magistrate Ghoraghat Amli Court-7, passed the order on Saturday, Israil Hossain, court police inspector, told The Business Standard.
Meanwhile, the case has been shifted to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has handed over Asadul Haque, the main accused of the case, to the police. A team of Rangpur Rab-13 handed over Asadul, who was undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, to Ghoraghat police station around 6.30 pm today.
The upazila DB's Officer-in-Charge Imam Zafar has been made the new investigating officer (IO) by replacing the previous IO – Ghoraghat Police Station's Inspector Maminul Islam.
Imam Zafar said, "Considering the case importance, we appealed to the judge for a 10-day remand for further questioning of the accused. However, the judge granted 7-day remand each for both the accused."
Earlier, injured Wahida's elder brother Sheikh Farid Uddin filed a case at around 11:30pm on Thursday against 4-5 unknown persons with Ghoraghat Police Station over the incident.
According to the case statement, a group of miscreants entered the UNO's government quarter through ventilator with a ladder from 1:05am to 4:25am on Thursday. They found UNO Wahida Khanam awake and wanted to know where the cupboard keys and other valuable things were.
They hit her with hammers on different parts of the body, including head, as Wahida refused to hand over the keys. Her father came to her room after hearing Wahida screaming. Then the miscreants attacked him too.
When both of them fainted due to bloodshed, the miscreants thought they were dead and fled the spot.
Wahida's father regained consciousness at around 6:30am and started shouting from inside. Then night guard Nazim Hossain Palash rushed there and found the gate to the staircase locked from inside. He entered the house through the bathroom's ventilator with a ladder, according to the statement.
