Cox’s Bazar municipality polls: 88 candidates submit nominations, 7 for mayor
A total of 88 candidates submitted nomination papers on Tuesday to contest in the Cox's Bazar municipality elections slated for 12 June.
Among the candidates, seven have submitted their nomination for the position of mayor, 65 for the position of general councillors for 12 wards and 16 for four reserved seats for females.
Returning Officer Shahadat Hossain, also Cox's Bazar district election officer, said the nominations will be scrutinised on 18 May.
"The last date for withdrawing nomination papers is 25 May," he said.
On the final day of filing nomination papers, Tuesday witnessed a significant gathering of people surrounding the district election office.
The seven mayoral candidates are the Awami League nominated Md Mahabubur Rahman Chowdhury, Awami League's rebel candidate Masedul Haque Rasel, his wife Jotsna Haque, independent candidates Jagadish Barua and Mohammad Al Jubayer Chowdhury, former mayor and Jamaat leader Sarwar Kamal, and the Islami Andolon Bangladesh nominated candidate Md Jahedur Rahman.
According to the district election office, there are 94,802 voters in 12 wards under Cox's Bazar municipality. Among them, 49,879 are males and 44,923 are females.
The last election of Cox's Bazar municipality was held on 25 July 2018 when Awami League's candidate Mujibur Rahman was elected mayor.
