Two suspects, Antor and Roman, have been arrested, while others involved remain at large, police confirmed
A pharmacist was beaten to death by a "teenage gang" early today (2 January) in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila.
Two suspects, Antor and Roman, have been arrested, while others involved remain at large, police confirmed.
The deceased, Hasibul Islam, 40, ran a pharmacy in Sreepur upazila. Four others, including his wife, Mahmuda Akhter, were injured in the attack. They alleged the attackers also looted gold ornaments during the incident.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mondal told TBS, "Two suspects have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend Rubel and other absconding individuals. A case is being processed in this regard."
According to Mahmuda, the family returned home from Dhaka around 2am in a car. While unloading luggage, a group of 6-7 youths, reportedly drug addicts, approached them, questioning their presence at the late hour. The confrontation escalated into an assault, during which Hasibul was beaten severely. When family members tried to intervene, they were also attacked.
Shimul Hossain, Hasibul's driver, described the attackers as aggressive and under the influence of drugs.
"They harassed the women and attacked us without provocation. Despite Hasibul's pleas, they continued their assault, eventually killing him."
Locals rushed Hasibul to Al Hera Hospital, but he was referred to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead around 3:15am.
Sreepur Police Station Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam confirmed that the body was sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
