Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men allegedly beat Moshrraf Shah, the Chittagong University (CU) correspondent of Prothom Alo, while also threatening him against reporting them or the BCL.
Mosharraf claimed he was beaten up in front of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on the campus around 11:30am today (24 September) by the followers of BCL's CU unit President Rezaul Haque.
When contacted, Rezaul told Prothom Alo he is looking into the matter and will take action against those involved in the attack.
Mosharraf Shah told Prothom Alo he had been going to the vice-chancellor's office around 11:30am today to get the Vice Chancellor's statement regarding the BCL beating the chief engineer of the university yesterday (23 September).
He claimed twenty men belonging to the BCL first pushed him from behind in front of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities before demanding to know why he was preparing to report on the BCL. As the situation escalated, he was punched in the face as well as kicked in the chest and hand.
Mosharraf also said that while he was being beaten, the men threatened him with consequences should he publish any further reports on BCL. "Do more news, and we will see who comes to save you. There will be no more news about BCL," they told him.
Mosharraf was given first aid at the University Medical Center. He was then transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital due to the injuries on his chest and hands.
"Mosharraf needed four stitches on his forehead. He also had injuries on his hand. X-rays need to be done," the Chief Medical Officer of the University Medical Center Md Abu Taiyab told Prothom Alo.
"He was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better treatment," Taiyab added.
Police Superintendent of Chattogram District SM Shafiullah told Prothom Alo that they are aware of the attack. He also said police spoke to the university administration, including the proctor. "Efforts are on to arrest the people involved."
