Ex-deputy speaker Shawkat Ali passes away
Former Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Colonel (Retd) Shawkat Ali passed away at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Monday morning at the age of 84.
Freedom Fighter Ali was kept on life support at the hospital from 5 November, where he breathed his last at 9:30am.
He also had been suffering from kidney, diabetes, pneumonia and high blood pressure for a long time.
Ali was one of the accused in the Agartala Conspiracy Case filed during the Ayub regime in Pakistan period.
Shawkat Ali had been elected lawmaker from Shariatpur-2 for five times.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep condolences and sympathy over the demise of Shawkat Ali.
In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina also extended sympathy to the bereaved family members.
He was born in Shariatpur, British India (now Bangladesh), to Munshi Mobarak and Maleka Begum.
