Explosions in Myanmar rattle Teknaf, at least 25 houses damaged
According to locals, the conflict between Arakan Army insurgents and Myanmar junta forces has escalated in the past three days
At least 25 houses in Teknaf village have developed cracks due to vibrations caused by intensified explosions across the border in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
"Teknaf's Acharbunia village is located four-kilometre across the Naf River from Maungdaw town in Myanmar. The intense sound of explosions has shaken the area. As a result, 25 semi-pucca tin-shed and mud-walled houses in the village have developed cracks," Mohammad Sharif, a member of Sabrang Union Parishad Ward-5 told The Business Standard today (16 October).
"Although bombs or mortar shells may not have reached our side due to the Naf River, some bullets have landed in Shahpari Island, Teknaf Land Port, and Damdamia area, hitting the homes and offices of local people," he added.
According to locals, the conflict between Arakan Army insurgents and Myanmar junta forces has escalated in the past three days. The area has been shaken by the sound of fighter jets circling and bombs being dropped in Myanmar.
Loud explosions were heard continuously from dawn to dusk on Monday (14 October) after a week-long break. Although the explosions ceased from Monday evening until midnight, it resumed again at 1am and continued until 3pm on Tuesday (15 October).
The same pattern of loud explosions and fighter jets circling was observed from dawn to dusk today.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Adnan Chowdhury, said, "People in the border villages are spending sleepless nights due to panic. They are being told to stay at a safe distance. The situation in Rakhine State is being monitored.
"The Border Guard Bangladesh [BGB] and Coast Guard are on alert to prevent infiltration. The higher authorities have been informed about the damaged houses. Arrangements will be made to provide government assistance to the affected people."
