BNP seeks EU’s support to bring back laundered money

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders have sought the support of the European Union (EU) to recover the money laundered by corrupt individuals over the years.

A meeting was held in this regard between BNP leadership and the EU deleagtion at BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan today (19 August).
During the meeting, the BNP delegation was led by the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Organizing Secretary and Member of the International Affairs Committee of the party Shama Obaid was also present in the meeting.
When asked about whether BNP wanted an investigation into the allegations of misappropriation of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant funds by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Amir Khasru said that they've discussed the issue with EU and the latter has agreed to help Bangladesh recover the money.
"We've also discussed about the economic and political future of Bangladesh. We tried to find ways in which the EU could help us to come out of the hole in which the country has fallen, and we've identified some aspects on which we could work," Amir Khasru said.
While briefing the journalists, Amir Khasru added that they've talked with EU on how the state institutions can ensure good governance and make a comeback to their previous conditions.
"EU ambassador has ensured that they will help our state institutions return to normalcy. Our topics of discussion also included Bangadeshi exports in European markets, restructuring our economic institutions and agreements that exist between Bangladesh and EU," Amir Khasru added.
"The matter of elections was also discussed in the meeting", Amir Khasru concluded.
