RU teacher arrested over Facebook status about Nasim
He was arrested from his residence around 2:00am on Wednesday
Police have arrested Kazi Zahidur Rahman, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering department at Rajshahi University (RU), for making derogatory comments about deceased former health minister Mohammad Nasim on Facebook.
He was arrested from his residence around 2:00am on Wednesday after a case was filed with Motihar Police Station against him under Digital Security Act.
SM Masud Parvez, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, said, "Advocate Tapos Kumar Saha, a resident of Sagorpara area of Rajshahi city, lodged the case against the teacher as he had posted several Facebook statuses making derogatory comments about Mohammad Nasim. That was why we arrested him under section 25, 29 and 31 of Digital Security Act."
Prof Zahidur was the former research and Information secretary of Narail Awami League. He posted several statuses on the social media regarding various irregularities in the health sector indicating the former health minister.
He was removed from his position in the party on June 16 for the same reason.
After Sirajum Munira, a teacher of Begum Rokeya University, had been arrested for similar reason under Digital Security Act, Zahidur's statuses surfaced.
The leaders and activists of Awami League and the pro-Awami League teachers demanded his punishment.
