Teenager stabbed to death in Cumilla while playing Ludo with friends
Roadblock protest with body demanding justice
A teenager was stabbed to death on Friday evening (27 Sep) in Cumilla, with five others injured during an altercation.
The deceased, Mahi Alam Maruf, 17, was the son of Babul Miah from the Shaktola area of the city. Locals said he lived with his mother in the same area he was killed.
The incident occurred near the Mainamati railway station adjacent to Naogaon in the city.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar South Model Police Station, Muhammad Rafiqul Islam confirmed the murder, but also said the exact motive behind Mahi's killing was yet to be determined.
An investigation is underway and currently it is suspected that this incident was triggered by a previous dispute.
Additional police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel have been deployed to maintain control.
Local sources report there was an ongoing conflict between Mahi's family and Tuhin from the neighbouring Ramnagar village.
On Friday afternoon, Mahi went to play Ludo near the Mainmati railway station, however, Tuhin and his friends attacked Mahi and his companions at that time.
Mahi and several others were stabbed during the altercation.
The identities of the injured were not immediately known.
After the incident, the victim was rushed to a local private hospital before being transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
That night, Mahi's relatives took his body in an ambulance to the Naogaon area and staged a roadblock on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway, protesting and demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the murder.
They also called for the arrest of the culprits.
Around this time an angry mob captured the suspect, Tuhin, and handed him over to the police.
