University lecturer arrested over satirical Facebook post about Nasim
Sirajam Munira was arrested after a case was filed against her under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
Police arrested Sirajam Munira, a lecturer of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, over a satirical Facebook post about former health minister Mohammad Nasim.
She was arrested early Sunday from her residence after a case was filed against her under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
Assistant director of the department of public relations of the university and general secretary of teachers' association Tabiur Rahman Prodhan said, "Sirajam Munira made a satirical post on Facebook Saturday morning about former health minister Mohammad Nasim, who had passed away on that day."
"The registrar of the university gave her a show-cause notice over the matter. President of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Begum Rokeya University unit Tushar Kibria filed a case against Sirajam Munira in ICT act with Tajhat Police Station. She was arrested at about 12:30 am," he added.
Officer-in-charge of Begum Rokeya University outpost EKM Mohibbul Islam said, "Chhatra League president Tushar lodged a complaint against her. But we did not accept his complaint. Later we arrested Sirajam in a case filed by the registrar of the university colonel Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal (retd)."
Local leaders of Awami League and the university Chhatra League unit busted into anger over the Facebook post. After realising the situation Sirajam Munira deleted the post from Facebook.
But by then the screenshot of the post had spread through social media. She made two apology posts on Facebook after 10:00 pm.
