Chattogram police have arrested a former member of the outlawed Bangladesh Chhatra League in a case filed over an attack on Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi, central co-coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, during a meeting at Rauzan Upazila Parishad of the district on Monday afternoon (20 January).
The arrestee, identified as Abdullah Al Hamim, 23, allegedly led the attack along with 15-20 unidentified individuals, according to police.
The reported attack occurred on Monday afternoon during a discussion meeting held at the Rauzan Upazila Parishad conference room.
Rafi and another movement executive committee member, Mohammad Russel Ahmed, attended the meeting.
Following the incident, a case was filed yesterday (21 January) with the Rauzan Police Station.
"Hamim allegedly led the attack, and a case was filed naming Hamim and three others, along with 15-20 unidentified individuals. Hamim has been arrested and sent to court in this case," Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Shafiq-ul-Alam Chowdhury confirmed the arrest and told The Business Standard.
"He was previously involved with Chhatra League," the OC noted.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Russel Ahmed, executive committee member of the movement, downplayed the incident saying, "I was present at the scene. Nothing significant happened. Hamim entered the venue with a few others and asked Rafi some questions, causing a minor commotion. I later escorted Hamim away."
Attempts to contact Rafi for a statement were unsuccessful as he did not respond to repeated calls.
