The Anti-discrimination Student Movement held a coffin procession at Dhaka University (DU) today (14 February), demanding a ban on Awami League.
In the coffin, the students were carrying the body of Md Hasan, 19, who went missing during protests on 5 August last year. His body was recently found at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue and identified by his family.
The procession started from the Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture at DU's TSC intersection after Jummah prayers and the first namaz-e-janaza of Hasan.
The janaza was attended by Hasan's family members and DU students.
Talking to reporters after the janaza, Hasan's father Md Monir Hossain said, "My son went missing on 5 August. We searched for him in hospitals, clinics, graveyards, and every possible place. But we did not find him anywhere."
"Recently, after receiving information from the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, we went to the DMCH morgue and identified my son based on the clothes he was wearing," he said.
He said Hasan would be buried at the family's village home in Bhola Sadar after a second janaza at 10am tomorrow (15 February).
"I don't want any father like me to lose his child. I want justice for the murder of my son," said Monir, demanding ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's trial.
Hasan's body, which was in the DMCH morgue for over six months, was handed over to his family today prior to the janaza and procession at DU.
In a brief rally after the procession, the leaders of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement said the AL must be banned and Hasina has to be brought back from India to stand trial and face highest punishment.
They said every single person who worked for or supported AL must be arrested and tried. Otherwise, the students and people would take the matter into their own hands, they warned.
Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organiser of the student body, said, "We are calling on the government to ban Awami League forever. If someone tries to rehabilitate the Awami League under the pretext of anything else, then just as 2,000 people were killed in July, 2,000 more will die if necessary to ban the Awami League."
"We will continue the fight to have the Awami League declared banned," he said.
