VAT intelligence raids Sairu
The resort in hilly Bandarban district was found to have dodged a huge amount of VAT every month since 2018
The VAT intelligence of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) conducted co-ordinated raids on Monday on the Sairu Hill Resort in Bandarban and its head office in Banani, Dhaka.
Based on the documents acquired during the drives, the VAT intelligence claimed that the resort had been dodging huge amount of Value Added Tax (VAT) since 2018. Intelligence seized computers, from which they recovered the actual sales figures of the resort from 2018 to date.
According to the VAT intelligence, the resort had dodged around Tk17.47 lakh VAT alone last October. Similar payment irregularities were found for other months as well.
Sairu Resort had been paying an average of around Tk1 lakh VAT per month, against an actual payable amount of around Tk15 lakh per month per its monthly sales, said the VAT intelligence.
"Sairu authorities collected VAT from the guests, but it did not deposit the funds in the state coffers. Rather, they financially benefited from evasion," said the VAT intelligence.
The resort is located on Chimbuk road, 28 kilometres away from Bandarban district. It offers "a luxury experience" in the distant hills.
