Babunagari threatening to withdraw case over Shafi’s death: Plaintiff

The plaintiff of the case, filed claiming former Hefazat-e-Islam chief Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi was murdered, has alleged that Junayed Babunagari, the current Ameer of the Islamist party, is threatening him to withdraw the case

Plaintiff Md Moin Uddin, who is brother-in-law of Ahmed Shafi, came up with the allegation at a press briefing at Chattogram Press Club on Saturday afternoon.
 
On 17 December, he filed the case with a Chattogram court against 36 leaders and activists of Hefazat, including its Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque. In the case, he claimed Ahmad Shafi was murdered in a planned way.
 
The case is now being investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) following a court order.
 
At the press conference, Moin alleged, "They (Babunangari and his followers) are instigating innocent teachers and students of Hathazari Madarasa to press for withdrawing the case. Babunagari is intentionally using Hathazari Madrasa (to reap own benefit)."
 
Noting that no teacher of Hathazari Madrasa was accused in the case, Moin questioned, "Why are they that much afraid of the lawsuit if they are innocent?"
 
"We have no anger for Babunagari if he is innocent. But if he is found guilty, we demand his capital punishment," he added.   
 
Moin reiterated the allegation that being sheltered by Babunagari, activists of different organisations, including Jamaat-e-Islam, their student wing Chhatra Shibir, BNP, banned militant outfit HuJI, Hizb ut-Tahrir, took part at the namaz-e-Janaza of Ahmad Shafi.
 
He also claimed that the eldest son of Ahmad Shafi - Mawlaana Yousuf Madani – was supposed to attend the press briefing. But followers of Mamunul Haque sent him back from Hathazari.
 
Earlier on 23 December, Junayed Babunagari claimed that the death of the former Amir Shah Ahmad Shafi was natural.
 
In a press briefing at Hathazari madrasa, he said the allegation against him for Shafi's murder is a political conspiracy.
 
He also demanded the withdrawal of cases filed regarding Shah Ahmad Shafi's death and conspiracy against students and teachers of Hathazari Madrasa and Hefazat leaders.
 
Shah Ahmad Shafi, the top leader of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and long-serving director general of Chattogram Hathazari Madrasa, passed away on 18 September at the age of 103.
