Hasan, the attacker, swooped on Faruk when the latter was naming the accused in his testimony.
In an outrageous act, an accused in a murder case has stabbed to death another accused of the same case during trial in a Cumilla court.
The deceased was identified as Faruk, son of Ohidullah of Cumilla’s Laksam upazila. He was a mason by profession.
The incident, which caused a stir, took place on Monday when the court of the 3rd Additional Districts and Sessions Judge was hearing the case filed over a 2013 murder in Manoharganj upazila.
Hasan, the attacker, and Faruk were engaged in an argument, trading accusations at each other for the murder.
At one point, Hasan swooped on Faruk and stabbed him indiscriminately with a sharp knife, leaving him seriously wounded.
Faruk ran to the room of Judge Fatema Ferdous to save his life. He was later rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Faruk and Hasan are cousins. They were out on bail in the case and came to the court to testify.
Police arrested Hasan immediately after the killing and seized the knife, said the court’s Public Prosecutor Nurul Islam.
