Execution alone will not curb terrorism: CTTC chief
We need to target the psyche and the youth can play an important role to build a terrorism-free country, says Monirul Islam
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam said only fines, imprisonment and death penalties are not enough to curb terrorism since extremism is born in one's mind.
"We need to target the psyche and the youth can play an important role to build a terrorism-free country," he said at a workshop held at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka on Friday.
The chief of DMP's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit said law enforcement agencies alone cannot fight terrorism and extremism. In fact, the involvement of all citizens is necessary in this respect.
Monirul emphasised the need for the role of families, educational institutions, civil society members, cultural personalities and Islamic leaders. "If they play their respective roles, we can instil a culture of harmony and tolerance in young generations."
Youth representatives from 64 districts took part in the workshop arranged by Darshak Shrota Pathak Foundation in association with Utshorgo Foundation.
