Shwapno leads green initiative, offers jute bags to replace plastic
Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, lauded Shwapno's introduction of jute bags as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic. This move follows the government's decision to ban plastic bags in supermarkets. During a customer awareness campaign at Shwapno's Gulshan-1 outlet on 1st October, Dr. Hossain highlighted the significance of the initiative, describing it as a revolutionary step in reducing plastic usage.
Dr. Hossain called this decision a landmark move by the interim government, encouraging widespread adoption of jute bags and promoting jute usage nationwide. He emphasized the need for collective dedication to make this initiative a success.
Sabbir Hasan Nasir, Managing Director of Shwapno, was also present, reinforcing Shwapno's commitment to sustainability. He shared that Shwapno is focused on building a better future for Bangladesh, particularly for urban middle-class families. As a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the superstore actively aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nasir pointed out that 10% of Shwapno's workforce is reserved for individuals with special needs and highlighted Shwapno's status as the only Global G.A.P.-certified retail chain in Southeast Asia.
Nasir expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change for their support. He urged customers to bring their own eco-friendly bags for shopping and mentioned that Shwapno offers affordable reusable bags in-store for those who do not bring their own. This initiative is part of Shwapno's broader effort to contribute to a plastic-free Bangladesh and promote a more sustainable future.
