Clashes in Tungipara leaves 50 including policemen injured
The severity of sporadic clashes forced police to fire hundreds of rubber bullets.
Sporadic clashes over establishing dominance in Tungipara have left 50 people, including 10 police personnel, injured. Perpetrators also vandalised and torched at least 10 shops and homes.
Police fired 315 rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. The clashes took place at Tungipara bus stand area around Tuesday midnight.
Confirming the matter, Tungipara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Enamul Kabir said: “Saiful Islam from Sriramkandi village asked a boy from Gimadanga to leave Gauhardanga Bridge on Tuesday. The two then locked into an altercation.
“On that night, people from the two villages engaged in a violent clash with locally made weapons. They attacked and torched 10 shops and homes.”
Those who got critically injured during the clash are undergoing treatment at Tungipara Upazila Health Complex and Gopalganj General Hospital. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avoid further untoward incidents.
A tense situation is prevailing in the area, and procedures to file a case over the incident are underway.
