A court today sent to jail former state minister of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Dipankar Talukdar in a case lodged over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jashida Islam passed the order as police produced him before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand in the case.
The defence, however, argued for his bail.
As the main case documents were not produced before the court during the hearing, the court sent the accused to jail and will hold a hearing on the remand and bail matters later.
Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Dipankar from the city's Sobahanbagh area on 10 February.
According to the case documents, BNP called a rally in the capital's Naya Paltan area on 28 October 2023. To counter the BNP rally, the then-ruling Awami League (AL) convened a rally on the same day in the capital.
The AL men with the support of law enforcement agencies attacked a BNP rally which left Shamim Mollah killed and injured many of its leaders and activists.
The case was filed against 704 people including AL general secretary Obaidul Quader on 24 September 2024.
