Husband 'beats wife to death with hammer' in Munshiganj, alleges son
One person has been detained in connection with the incident
A man allegedly murdered his wife reportedly by hitting her with a hammer over a dispute regarding loan repayment in Munshiganj today (18 October), according to the accused's son and police.
The deceased has been identified as Nazma Begum while the accused has been identified as Anwar Hossain Anu of Tongibari upazila's Kamarkhara village.
She was the second wife of Anwar.
"We have detained one person in connection with the incident. A complaint has been filed, and the process of registering a case is underway," Tongibari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Muhidul Islam told The Business Standard.
He, however, did not immediately disclose any other details regarding the detainee.
"We will conduct a thorough investigation and take legal action," the OC added.
Ibrahim, son of Anwar from his first marriage, said, "There was a long-standing ongoing dispute between them over the payment of a loan taken from a local NGO. My father was addicted to drugs and had suffered significant losses in his business. He would often beat her whenever she asked about the loan instalments."
Nazma had filed a complaint with the Tongibari Police Station recently after she was beaten by Anwar, according to Ibrahim.
"After my stepmother filed the complaint, he called her today at Kamarkhara graveyard, promising to pay the instalment and then brutally attacked her with a hammer, leaving her seriously injured," he added.
Anwar immediately fled from the area, he said.
Nazma was rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital in a critical condition around 11am, but the doctors there referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she died around 2pm on her way.
Dr Pranto Sarkar, a doctor at the emergency department of, said, "The body has been kept in the morgue for autopsy."
