The top 5 sushi Dhaka has to offer
We have picked five places that make the best sushi in Dhaka
When we think of sushi, we think of chunks of raw fish sandwiched between some rice. But this isn't all there is to this traditional, Japanese delicacy.
So, what makes for a good sushi platter? Firstly, the fish. When it comes to raw varieties of Sushi, the fish needs to be of the freshest quality as it can pose health risks otherwise.
The second considerable factor is the rice. It needs to be sticky enough to hold everything together and has to have enough flavour to compliment the fish.
A maki variant, however, requires a great exterior which is oftentimes crunchy and a powerhouse of flavour with the addition of scrumptious fillings such as prawns and lobsters.
We tasted both the varieties and listed down the top 5 Sushi Dhaka has to offer based on the flavours, freshness, uniqueness and of course, taste, although the price factor has been exempted.
5. Umai: Scallop Nigiri Sushi (Tk485)
Ranking at the fifth position is Umai with a classic "nigiri" Sushi variant - Scallop Nigiri Sushi.
As simply as the name suggests, this Sushi is made with fresh and sweet cuts of scallops, placed over a morsel of sweet and tangy vinegared rice, tied together with a strand of nori.
The vinegar from the rice masks the underlying flavour of raw fish excellently, although the fish itself has no bad odour to account for.
Anyone with the taste buds for nigiri will love this dish due to its fresh and light taste. Dip it in some pungent wasabi and soya sauce for that added kick.
4. Tokyo Express: Deep Fried Lobster Roll (Tk690)
Filled with a fat slice of lobster, wrapped with nori, flash and deep fried, and topped off with a spicy chili paste scored Tokyo Express's Deep Fried Lobster Roll the fourth place on our list.
A blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy is what this dish is. As soon as you take a bit of the first piece of this maki dish, an explosion of crunchy-lobster goodness will fill your mouth.
This dish's taste is overwhelmingly unique for it to be properly penned down in words. But rest assured, the Deep Fried Lobster Roll will satisfy anyone's maki roll cravings.
3. Fool's Diner: Mixed Tuna and Salmon Sushi (Tk695)
Belonging from the nigiri family, Fool's Diner's Mixed Tuna and Salmon Sushi is a delight for nigiri sushi lovers.
This platter serves three pieces of sweet, soft and flavourful salmon and three pieces of sweet and refreshing tuna nigiris. The nicely prepared rice compliments the fresh cuts of raw fish with its vinegar kick.
Although a simple enough sushi platter, the simplicity and freshness of the dish is what makes it so good.
2. Sushi Samurai: Hot Night Roll (Tk790)
This platter of six pieces maki roll has earned itself the second place on our list due to the crispy batter fried crunchies and minced spicy tuna topping beautifying the sushi's exterior and soft lobster filling.
The harmony of flavours from the spicy Japanese mayo and crispy bits on top added just the right amount of spiciness to the otherwise sweet amalgamation of rice and lobster, which had the lingering taste of seawater freshness.
Among the maki rolls we tasted so far, this one was different due to the crunchy exterior and spicy concoction of mayo and sauce. Making it even better was the fact that the Hot Night Roll is flame-torched for that extra point.
1. Kiyoshi: The Crabby Affair (Tk985)
And the winner is The Crabby Affair from Kiyoshi!
Without damaging respect to its name, this fusion maki platter tasted as freshly crabby as possible. If we have to talk about the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, this platter steals the show.
The orange tobiko topping was the showstopper and added the perfect texture and bite to the soft rolls while the sauces drizzled over top contributed to balance the maki's tanginess.
The Hot Night Roll leans more towards the good kind of saucy end of the spectrum. In short, this platter was crispy, savory and simply ambrosian.
